Maths - First, Then and Now

During the Summer term we will be using 'Number stories' to apply our knowledge of number bonds in real life contexts within 10. 

We will be working on listening to the number story carefully and representing each step practically using a variety of resources such as Tens Frames, Numicon and Part Whole Models to solve the calculations. Once we are secure in solving the problem practically, we will work on recording our calculations as 'number sentences' with a focus on forming the numerals correctly.

The children will use a variety of concrete resources to suport them in solving mathematical problems and learning their number bonds to 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. What a challenge that is! Using these resources really helps the children to learn these facts in a practical, hands on way so that they have a deep understanding of the composition of numbers. This has a huge impact on their confidence and maths fluency as they move through school when they will be able to apply this knowlesge to very challenging concepts.
