Geography

At Beechwood, we want of pupils to be engaged in the world around them and understand how their contributions to the world make a difference.

Intent

We aim to provide learning opportunities in geography which encourage children to:

  • foster a love and understanding of our local environment and the world beyond;
  • understand how human processes and physical processes interact, and the effect they have on the human and physical environment;
  • develop and nurture inquisitive minds and to equip the children with skills in order to find answers to their questions.

Our geography curriculum is driven by three golden threads that provide a framework for learning and help to deepen children’s understanding of what is being taught from Early Years to Year 6. These golden threads are:

  • My local area:
  • Weather and Climate; and
  • Sustainability.

Implementation

Geography is taught through a blocked curriculum approach in discreet lessons and themed days. Where possible,  the children are taken out into the community to learn through experiences and by asking questions. They take part in fieldwork and investigations in the local area and beyond. During lessons, scientific and mathematical skills are practised in real life contexts, as well as computing and English skills. Alongside our explicit geography units in Years 1 to 6, there are also 'Spotlight on Crewe' units where children study the local geography and history of Crewe.

Our curriculum is closely linked to the National Curriculum 2014 and our school RESPECT values are woven throughout all of our learning.
