History

At Beechwood Primary School, our history curriculum is designed to engage children’s curiosity about the past on how this impacts our lives today.

Intent

We aim to provide learning opportunities in history which encourage children to:

  • inspire our pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past.
  • understand the process of change, the diversity of societies as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.
  • ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments and develop perspective and judgment.

Each history topic has a variety of quality texts to read alongside the subject, encouraging children to apply what they have learnt and to see things in a variety of contexts. Primary and secondary sources of evidence are used to develop research skills and children develop an understanding of historical periods through use of a timeline.

Our history curriculum is driven by three golden threads that provide a framework for learning and help to deepen children’s understanding of what is being taught from Early Years to Year 6. These threads are:

  • Community and Culture:
  • Achievements and Legacy; and
  • Migration.

Implementation

History is taught through a blocked curriculum approach in discreet lessons and themed days. Where possible,  children are taken out into the community to learn through experiences and by asking questions. Workshops, museum visits and experts guidance complement the curriculum. Alongside our explicit history units in Years 1 to 6, there are also 'Spotlight on Crewe' units where children study the local history and geography of Crewe.

Our curriculum is closely linked to the National Curriculum 2014 and our school RESPECT values are woven throughout all of our learning.
