Starting the Day

The school day will start at 8.30am and end at 3:20pm. As a school, we are aiming for 96% attendance so please ensure that you are in on time.

Snack and Lunch

In Year 5, a healthy snack can be brought from home or a paid snack from the school kitchen. This costs £2.50 per week and is paid through the school Gateway app.

Reading is such an important part of your child's development. It helps with many things including their vocabulary, writing, spelling and understanding of the world we live in.

Children in Year 5 are expected to read for at least 3 times a week and record this in their Reading Record. Children have access to a variety of texts to choose in school, as well as access to MyOn and Accelerated Reader.

Throughout the year, children in Year 5 will complete reading assessments to ensure their reading level is progressing which also helps match books to their abilities.

In Year 5, we will continuously explore high quality texts. These will change each term and this is what we will base our English work on in lessons. This autumn, we will be reading FArTHER by Grahame Baker-Smith.

The children will also continue to develop an understanding of the spelling, punctuation and grammar that is expected in Year 5. Children in Y5 will be given spellings to practise at home using 'Spelling Shed'.

The children will learn a variety of mathematical skills including problem solving through White Rose Maths. This autumn, we will be learning a range of topics; Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, and Multiplication and Division.

It is very important that the children practise their times tables weekly as quick recall of these facts help children to focus on the new learning without spending too much time on the basics.

There are a variety of resources available to practise these including writing them down, chanting/singing, online platforms like ‘Hit the Button’ or playing on Times Table Rockstars.

PE is taught on Tuesdays and Fridays in Year 5. During autunn term, Rowan class will be swimming on a Tuesday, and will need to bring a one-piece swimming costume, towel and healthy snack. Ash class will swim later in the year. Please make sure your child has their correct PE kit in school on these days. In addition to this, children in Year 5 will be taking part in daily exercise time to help increase the amount of activity they are completing each day.

This term’s topic is all about the Anglo Saxons. The children are going to love learning all about the impact of these visitors on our civilisation.

In Autumn 1, our topic will be ‘Earth and Space', in which the children will focus on the motion of the planets, moon and sun, historical theories and the effects of this movement on our daily lives.

For our Autumn 2, our topic will be ‘Forces’. The class will look at different forces, how they can be measured and the ways in which they can be useful or an obstacle in everything we do.

We keep you up-to-date and communicate via Class Dojo. Keep an eye on our class story for information on what we have been learning as well as important reminders. If you have any queries or concerns about your child's learning then please do not hesitate to speak to us, either by phoning the school office or sending a message on Class Dojo.

Keeping Safe

As a school, we take safeguarding very seriously. This includes online safety and we are very aware that many children enjoy playing on tablets, phones and even with Alexa!

Please help us to keep your children safe by clicking on the image below and keeping up to date with tips and ideas to keep children safe on the internet.

Please label all uniform including coats, P.E. kit, shoes, hats and jumpers. It is extremely difficult to locate lost uniform if it does not have a name on it. We will be labelling these items if they are not already labelled. Jumpers must have the Beechwood logo.
