Curriculum

Our Curriculum

At Beechwood Primary School, we believe that every pupil deserves the best education to equip them for the next stage in their life, whatever and wherever that will be.

We offer a broad and balanced curriculum where all subjects are valued. Children learn a wealth of knowledge and skills in all areas of the curriculum through discreet and linked subject areas, ensuring progression but also revisiting, to embed learning.

Woven through our curriculum are 7 values which we call our ‘RESPECT Values’. These are:

  • Resilience
  • Enterprise
  • Self-Confidence
  • Pride
  • Experiences
  • Communication
  • Team-Work

In everything we offer pupils at Beechwood Primary School, these values are at the heart of what we provide. We believe that these characteristics will prepare our pupils, alongside a strong grasp of the National Curriculum, to enter into whatever career they choose. We focus on preparing our pupils for the economic world, through developing their skills to successfully communicate and work with others whilst giving them opportunities that they may not otherwise experience.

Reading and a love of books is also a driver for Beechwood’s curriculum, and each year group will be reading books linked to the English theme and humanities theme each term. Books will also be referenced and read together linking to other areas of the curriculum. For more information on this and for suggested texts to read at home, please visit your class page on the website.

To learn more about the curriculum knowledge and skills that are covered in each year group, please see the class pages or subject specific progression maps.

Each year group also learns about a famous person each term and completes physical and mental missions based on them. These had been adapted from ‘Commando Joes’ and are called ‘Mission Possible!’ Each class has a display about the missions they have achieved and the RESPECT values they have been using.

Our curriculum has been clevery planned to ensure progression and good coverage of the knoweldge and skills pupils need.

Some subjects are taught in discrete lessons rather than as part of a  theme, such as Science, Computing, Physical Education (PE), Religious Education (RE), Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) including Sex and Relationship Education (SRE).

PSHE

In the Autumn Term, both Key Stage 1 and 2 focus on 'Health and Well-Being', in Spring the theme is 'Relationships' across the school and in the Summer Term, the whole school learns about 'Living in the Wider World, Economic Wellbeing and being a Responsible Citizen.' The objectives ensure progression in the three themes throughout the school and each child is assessed every half term.

The DfE has recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.” The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy and these values have been reiterated by the Prime Minister this year.
