The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum is used in Nursery and Reception. The EYFS Framework explains how and what your child will be learning to support their healthy development.

Your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through 7 areas of learning:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)
  • Communication and Language (CL)
  • Physical Development (PD)

  • Literacy (L)
  • Mathematics (M)
  • Understanding the World (UW)
  • Expressive Arts and Design (EAD)

These 7 areas are used to plan your child's learning and activities. The professionals teaching and supporting your child will make sure that these activities are suited to your child's unique needs. The curriculum is designed to be flexible and all learning is play based.

Children in the EYFS learn by playing and exploring, being active and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outside.

Your child will be observed by all members of the EYFS team in both Nursery and Reception. Some of these observations will be recorded in writing or as a photograph and these are presented in your child's book called a 'Learning Journey'. These are updated weekly and are available for you to see  at anytime. Just speak to your child's class teacher.

We use an online learning journey called 'Tapestry' to complement the books we use in school. Pictures and observations of each child are uploaded to a safe and secure website which is password protected. Each family is given a password to access their child's information online. There is also an opportunity for parents to comment on videos, photographs and observations, letting us know how your child is progressing and learning at home. If you would like any further information about Tapestry or support on how to use it, please speak to nursery or reception staff.

We use all of this observation information to inform our planning to ensure that all children make progress and that their individual needs are met.
